I am looking for my first off road bike. Used is way over priced in general it seems right now with a few exceptions, at least IMO. I might have to go new. So far my new short list is a KLX300 or CRF300l, or maybe even a lowly KLX230. There is, however, a like new with 780 miles KLX250 near me. If the price were right would that be as good a buy as a new 300? What would be considered a good price? Would I regret not getting a 300 vs a 250/230? I'm about 6' and about 225 naked. Bike would be used on dirt roads and street. No real technical riding. There is also a '08 CRF230l about an hour and a half from me for $2800. Should that be a contender? EDIT 230l is sold. I guess that was a good price as it sold quickly. Get the like new 250. It's a couple hp different than the 300, otherwise same/same. At your height and size It's a better fit than a 230 Price is key. The klx300 is great, but I have no idea compared to the 250. The 300 may have a little better resale if needed. I really like my klx300. , but I bought it used with a few miles on it and every farkle I wanted already installed. 250 with a tailwind > 300 without markk53 jack of all trades... Super Supporter $179 AHL299cc kit can help level the playing field. If the 250 is carbureted, a $180 new Mikuni TM36-68 kicks the power up even more and really quick response. So it's not a total negative going to an older KLX if the price is right. thebisch Been here awhile Joined Nov 7, 2013 Oddometer 443 Could xt225/250 or DR200 be contenders? How does a Himalayan stack up, or just way out in left field? Your gonna want that KLX300 The 230 will be fun, but unless your riding local to home, it will bore you quickly. The 250 is great, but the 300 does well with keeping up with anything but KTMs off road and on road it will tour easily and keep you going. Join Team Green! I did a review on the new 300 and I owned at 250 at the time of the review. Unless you get the 250 for a cracking price, just grab the 300. I'll put my review below if you want to check it out. thebisch Been here awhile Joined Nov 7, 2013 Oddometer 443 So, so far I have been able to sit on a new KLX300sm I'm not interested in a SM, but it was in stock so I sat on it, 2020 CRF250L Rally, and a new XT250. My observations so far, the KLX felt cheesier and "cheaper" than the Honda. To my surprise, I felt most comfortable on the XT250. Try this review of the xt250. Also he does one on budget small cc dual sports. I still highly recommend the klx. Has best suspension in my mind. markk53 jack of all trades... Super Supporter Reviewers often felt the KLX was more off road than any of the others and the suspension shined as the speed picked up. Klx250 good reliable low maintenance do anything go anywhere bikes, I’ve had a few of these over the years and recommend imho Kawasaki KLX 230 SM vs Viar Cross X 250 ES - Basic information Brand Kawasaki Indonesia Viar Indonesia Fuel Type Petrol Petrol Body Type OFF-ROAD Bikes OFF-ROAD Bikes Price Rp 54,5 Million Price Kawasaki KLX 230 SM Rp 42,73 Million Price Viar Cross X 250 ES Available Colors Kawasaki KLX 230 SM vs Viar Cross X 250 ES - Console Navigator Side Stand Indicator Speedometer Digital Analog View More Kawasaki KLX 230 SM vs Viar Cross X 250 ES - Electrical Accessory Outlet Indicator Light Head Lamp LED Bulb View More Kawasaki KLX 230 SM vs Viar Cross X 250 ES - Differentiating Features Cruise Control Height Adjustable Seats Kawasaki KLX 230 SM vs Viar Cross X 250 ES - Chassis & Suspension Seat Type Single Seat Single Seat Side Wings Electronic Suspension Adjustment View More Kawasaki KLX 230 SM vs Viar Cross X 250 ES - Safety & Security Back Rest ABS Stability Control View More Kawasaki KLX 230 SM vs Viar Cross X 250 ES - Brake Front Brake Disc Disc Rear Brake Disc Disc Kawasaki KLX 230 SM vs Viar Cross X 250 ES - Engine & Performance Fuel Tank Size L Add Another Bike To Comparison Kawasaki KLX 230 SM vs Viar Cross X 250 ES - Chassis & Suspension Front Suspension Inverted Fork USD Fork Rear Suspension Spring Preload Mono Shock Suspension TravelFront 204 mm Kawasaki KLX 230 SM vs Viar Cross X 250 ES - Dimension Seating Capacity 2 2 Length 2050 mm 2120 mm Width 835 mm 810 mm View More Kawasaki KLX 230 SM vs Viar Cross X 250 ES - Wheels & Tyres Front Tyre 110/70 R17 80/100 R21 Rear Tyre 120/70 R17 100/100 R18 Front Wheel Size R17 R21 View More Kawasaki KLX 230 SM vs Viar Cross X 250 ES - Engine & Performance Exhaust Pipes Single Exhaust Single Exhuast Drive Type Chain Drive Chain Drive Cooling System Air Cooled View More Kawasaki KLX 230 SM vs Viar Cross X 250 ES - Fuel & Ignition Start Option Electric Kick Ignition System Digital Fuel Supply System Fuel Injection View More Kawasaki KLX 230 SM vs Viar Cross X 250 ES - Gear & Transmission Gear Box 6-Speed 6-Speed Transmission Type Manual Manual Outside of the obvious difference in engine displacement and the fact that the KLX250S is street legal, does anyone know the differences between the two bikes? Do they share the same frame and suspension components, for example? What parts are interchangeable? Anyone have riding experience on either or on both I'm not even sure if the KLX250S is availble yet? Thanks! Jeff BIG DIFFERENCE! 250 has the magic button, Hot ticket is the buy the 250 put the 300 Barrel and piston on it they share the same head/valves etc throw an Ohlins on the back have someone do the front forks springs and Valving There you have an awesome bike JMO What he said....Seems a bit silly for Kawi to have made the street legal model "only" a 250 but its all OEM parts to bump it to the 300. I'm debating on doing the 331 bore/sleeve or bore/plate to mine as I picked up a trashed 300 cylinder that would have to be sleeved, or picking up a new 300 cylinder to have it bored/plated. The $250 price difference is a stumbling block as I can't find a definitive answer as to which process is more reliable. Thanks for the input! You guys do know that I'm talking about the 2009 KLX250S, right? Is it even available for sale, yet? There seem to be some frame difference between it and the previous KLX250 models? I'm not sure. The engine could be slightly different too? Jeff Since you asked if anyone had experience on a KLX300, I assume this is of some value I had one, had the forks massaged, put on a manual decomp lever, PUT ON A PUMPER CARB netted a very significant increase in power and rideability, and a tall saddle, and enjoyed it in the woods very much. A bit cammier than an XR, felt very slender and light, and was a joy. Still kick myself for selling it, but then, I did get an XR650R to replace it, so who am I to complain? That would be a fun ride. Too bad I still need to pay off my KLR . If you were happy replacing a KLX300 with an XR650R, you had the wrong bike in the first place. Cool ... sounds like a great idea. What is the approximate cost for parts and labor? Do you use the same carburetor, just with different jetting? Jeff should use the same carb but not quite sure on that, many throw the stocker out and put in a pumper, I have left mine as I finally got the jetting right, The vacuum carbs are not as much of a problem with altitude changes once you get them dialed. Don't know the cost of the parts, but I bet it would be cheaper than me trying to put all the parts together to the electric start on mine. I think Larry Rossler was doing the E-start kit for around $1800 years ago??? I have the Ohlins shock on my 300 what a difference that made . Racetech springs in front, Great lil bike, but still dated compared to a new Husky 250 with the Athena 300 kit, which will smoke the KLSX300 everywhere. After riding my sons Husky 300 I don't even want to ride my Lil kawi anymore Stock the Husky 250 puts out more than a stock 300 and I think more than a properly jetted KLX331 28 hp on several dynos. For the 300 or 331 you can use the oem carb. The 300 kit will set you back just over $500, or 331 is $760 ish including prices include all assorted gaskets, pins, clips, rings, piston, and new cylinder. KustomKraft check my spelling... does the 331 kit, there are others but they come highly recommended. Sorry didn't realize you were comparing the 09 to the 300, as far as that goes, there has been nothing said that the motor is different but only time will tell. What Husky 250 model are you referring to? Is it street legal? No biggie about the 09 KLX250S model ... I guess it may be too soon to be asking questions about it. Does anyone know when they'll actually be available? One dealer told me February, but that was a few weeks ago. Jeff The TE 250 is the enduro street legal model, I think thats the same as he is referring to above. Those have a close ratio six speed and are definitely more "sporty" than the KLX line. Is this the same 250 engine that is on the klr250? It looks like the same engine except for the electric start... So you are not real sure of that??? Yes it does but a KLX300 has much more torque down low it will lug down and pull my fat ass up tight steep single tracks that the Husky 250 can't, Stock Husky has way more power up top but no where near the bottom grunt of the stock KLX300, But that all goes away when you put the Athena 300 kit on the Husky Now you have the bottom end and the great top end. YES Not a direct replacement, and yes, they are different bikes. The KLX shines in the tight stuff and is extremely flickable. The XR is more flickable in the tight woods around here than any sane person should expect, but will punish you when the going gets very rough. Unless you get good with letting the throttle get you OUT of trouble instead of INTO it. Watch Neduro ride one sometime. The KLX does not have legs at 8,000 ft, where I ride. The XR never runs out of legs. I ride the XR where I rode the KLX, except I also ride it flat out on dirt roads and the desert. The XR can cover a much broader swath of motorcycling. But they are different rides, yes. However, they share a couple things besides being venerable bulletproof thumper designs they have their share of detractors who complain about old tech, and with some tweaks both become extremely flexible and capable machines that run forever. No, I did not have the wrong bike in the first place. I missed it to the point that I picked up a KDX220 more than a few similarities, but the XR sees a lot more riding. Just a thumper kinda guy I guess. KLX500R or 600R, anyone? I'd buy it. As long as it worked better than the KLX650 did, though I admit I was tempted... The 450 is worthy close. Remember, things make 20%-30% less power up here in the rare air. Is anyone on the board going to buy the new KLX250S the 2009 model listed as being available this coming February? Jeff SamM Jeep Overlander I'm considering the 2009 Kawasaki KLX250S as a replacement for my plated 2005 Yamaha TT-R250. The TT-R has an air-cooled engine which I like much more but if I make the big switch to green, I may as well go all the way. It's lightweight and comes streetlegal. Since the 300 engine parts are a direct swap for the stock 250 stuff, that makes it attractive to me as a nice little commuter/trailbike!
